The story begins in 1953 when Don's brother, Doug, became an engineer and then a DJ at KIOA in Des Moines, Iowa. Not long after that he convinced his brother, Don, to join the business and the rest is history. Both MacKinnons became hits with an addictive sense of humor. Don heeded the siren's call of large markets while Doug stayed in the Midwest. Don was killed in 1965 at 32 when his car went off a cliff in Malibu, California, when he was at KFWB. In retirement Doug became a published author and columnist. He passed away May 8, 2020, at 89 in Des Moines.
